Investarms Hawkens are great rifles, well built and accurate. My first muzzleloader ever (bought in 1977) was a Charles Daly (Investarms) .54 Hawken, still have it, still shoots great. Use a mix of beeswax and either mutton tallow or Crisco melted together to lubricate the threads. Dip the screw plug into the warm melted wax and tallow mix.The rifled barrel will spin the shot. When the shot leaves the muzzle it will open the pattern at very close range. The shot will most likely be damaged to add to poor shooting. Its a fine grained powder. Swiss 3f is a spunky powder! That charge with a .490 ball out of an old Renegade chrono'd 1750 fps. I found that when shooting with a nitro card I was getting a donut pattern, though the standard Skychief load still significantly reduced pattern size. The old timers sorted out how long a barrel needed to be and as powder got better the barrel got shorter.
